Mountain view is one of the most impressive of landscapes. They are absolutely fascinating and impressed with their greatness. Mountains inspire! It is not surprising that this made them a very popular art object.
Mountains can be a great way to enhance a landscape and can be used as an indication of scale in the landscape. Just a great visual tool for your art.
So let's learn to draw mountains!

Mountains Base
Step 1
Before starting, we must remember a few important characteristics of a mountain:
- every mountain looks like a triangle in its shape
- single mountains are extremely rare
- the structures are rough and the outlines are mostly straight
Therefore, the first step is to draw an outline of several triangles located between each other. It's more expensive to give your mountains perspective.
To better emphasize the volume of your image, make one triangle higher than the others. This will be your highest mountain.
Step 2
Perfectly! There is a shape of your future mountains!
Now we need more realism.
None of the mountains in the world is perfectly smooth, so create a rocky slope using an irregular contour with sharp uneven tops.
Step 3
Now you have to draw a mountain range that will later divide your mountains into light and dark sides. To do this, imagine each of them as a pyramid and draw a line down from the center of the mountain. BUT not straight, but similar to lightning. BOOM!
Step 4
Now, we need to create a sense of structure and rock-like texture.
I think it's time to give the mountains some volume. Use the peak points of the central range top for other, smaller cliffs.
This requires even more lines similar to lightning, diverging in different directions. They may be interrupted, become thinner, and disappear. However, these forms should look jagger and as elongated triangular shapes that run down each side of the mountain range.
This process is similar to meditation and is very exciting.
Congratulations! The base of your mountains is ready!
But this is not the end!
Mountains light and shadow
Step 5
Imagine sunrise (or sunset, or afternoon, whatever you prefer) in other words the position of the sun over the mountains.
This will depend on which side of the mountain is going to be brightly lighted and which side is going to be in shadow.
Since earlier we divided your mountain into two parts with the ridge, then the side of the mountain that is closer to the sun we make it brighter. The opposite one - we darken.
It is important to remember that near the range will be the darkest area. By doing this, we create a more realistic rock structure.
Step 6
Now, to create a sense of structure and rocky texture in the mountain landscape, let's add some lighter shadows on the lighter side, going away from the smaller rocks.
You can create tonal differences on each side.
Step 7
Since we need to create a geometric rocky terrain, we recommend adding some smaller peaks around the mountain, which may look like little curved lines or just dots. They can be slightly lighter than the main outline.
Ready!
You have created a flawless illustration of mountains!
It wasn't difficult, right? If you understand the basic mountain shape from a simple triangular with a split ridge line in the middle, you can draw infinite mountains.
Extend lines to make mountains taller, create deviating triangle shapes, get inspired by photos of mountain peaks, or use your imagination. The main thing is to make sure that you keep consistency with the shadow and the light side of the mountains!
Good luck!
